How about Countdown to Shutdown (C64)? That's one of those cool-looking games that I've played sporadically off & on over the years, but never got very far in because I never knew exactly what I was supposed to do or how to go about it.

Doesn't sound familiar, I'll have to check it out! I know I have Gorf, HardBall!, and Paradroid in the hopper for next week.

Ultima IV might be tough to do in the show's short format, but I may be able to zip through it a bit.

Druid and Druid II, awesome.

Agreed, but you will thrive on the challenge. :-) You could show the initial character creation and walking into town, but I suppose even that would run a little long.

Always like Druid, great music.

Maybe I can do a whole week of Ultima -- like Ultima I, II, III, etc. Hm. Let me think about that.

Beach Head II! I love the part where the tank rolls over one of the soldiers and he screams.

Yes please! I bought the Ultima I-IV (or was it V?) pack many years ago for my PC and I need to rip the CD and install it on my desktop for old times sake (I may need to find the PC slow down code so Ultima I will actually work).

If they're old enough versions, you would do better with DosBox.

On a related note, we're losing an entire generation of games. Games designed for Windows 95 and 98 are a bitch to get running on modern computers. Too new for DosBox, too old for modern Windows.

Yes, I figured DosBox may be required.

I still have Win95 and Win98 CD's and keys and I plan to install them on my VMWare Workstation. So if DosBox doesn't work, the Virtual machine should.

GOG is great -- they sell old games and make sure they will run on modern systems, including all the Ultimas.

In fact it looks like Ultima IV is one of the free games they give you when you make an account.

I would be curious to hear how that works, from a performance standpoint. I have a couple of old school machines left out in the garage (at least one 386 and one 486) but if virtualizing 95/98 works well enough to the point that the multimedia-type games run at a decent clip, I may get rid of the hardware.

Let me dig up the disks and I'll let you know when I get results.

Unfortunately VMWare does not offer any kind of CPU throttling. So it will be the fastest Win 95 I've ever run. I'm thinking it will have 256M and 1 GB disk space. Beefy system for its day but now it's so tiny! It's like a toy computer now. ;)

Sorry if you all saw any weirdness in here this morning. I now have an automatic RSS reader cross-posting into this forum so I don't have to do that part manually anymore.

It looks like it. I never got to use any of the pay BBS services on the Commodore 64, mostly because I was too young to have a job then. Plus there were so many free BBSes around here to call (and free games to download) that I didn't (at the time) see the advantage of the big services.

Into the Eagle's Nest is a cool Nazi-themed Gauntlet-style game. You should do an ep on that one.
