Relocating mp3 files

Post by Flack »

I signed up for some hosting space over at Host Gator and will be moving the mp3 files for my podcast over there. My home broadband just can't handle 1,000 people trying to download 50-100 meg files at the same time. The new hosting is infinitely faster for downloads so that should help everyone who has complained about the slow download speeds.

Another great thing about this new domain is it's a lot easier to get download numbers from. This is from last week.

/podcast/Sprite_Castle_001-Pirates.mp3 92 177 3.64 GB 13.85 MB
/podcast/YDKF-148-Modchips.mp3 37 48 3.57 GB 43.06 MB
/podcast/Sprite_Castle_000-Introduction.mp3 11 9 262.74 MB 13.14 MB
/podcast/YDKF-147-Merry_Christmas.mp3 9 8 593.97 MB 34.94 MB
/podcast/YDKF-146-Kong_Off_3.mp3 8 0 328.62 MB 41.08 MB
/podcast/YDKF-141-Raspberry_Pi.mp3 8 35 1.08 GB 25.76 MB
/podcast/YDKF-139-Galloping_Ghost_Arcade.mp3 7 26 1001.69 MB 30.35 MB
/podcast/YDKF-125-Video_Game_Crash.mp3 7 19 686.33 MB 26.40 MB
/podcast/YDKF-145-About_Podcasting.mp3 7 5 986.30 MB 82.19 MB
/podcast/YDKF-140-Reclaiming_Spaces.mp3 7 7 746.61 MB 53.33 MB

The one thing I'm not sure of is, take the first one:

/podcast/Sprite_Castle_001-Pirates.mp3 92 177 3.64 GB 13.85 MB

The 92 is "downloads" and the 177 is "partial downloads". If someone is streaming the episode and stops it during the closing music, it's reported as a partial download. What I don't know is, do I add the two numbers together, or is the 92 a subset of the 177?

And also why aren't people listening all the way to the end? Gah!

I figured out that you have to add the two numbers together. On most of them the number on the left is higher, in other words, 100 downloads and 50 incomplete downloads. That's what was confusing me -- were the 50 incomplete ones included in the 100? But on the new episode the numbers are switched. There are roughly 150 complete downloads and 200 incomplete, and since that incomplete number is higher, it can't be a subset of the other number.

I still don't know why so many people don't listen all the way to the end. Sometimes I hide little nuggets at the end.

Did not know that about easter eggs in the episodes. I usually stop them after the music swells and you mention the contact info. I will have to re-listen to my favorites again.

On Sprite Castle, the end music is an 8-bit rendition of a song that's related to the episode in some way. I never mention the titles. For episode 1 (Pirates) it was the theme from Pirates of the Carribean. For episode 2 (Winter Games) it was Winter Wonderland. Spoiler, for episode 3 (Bruce Lee) it will be "Turning Japanese", which is funny because Bruce Lee is Chinese.
