Episode 135: Backmasking

Post by Flack »

Episode 135 is Online.

Say a prayer and grab the Holy water — today’s episode is all about backmasking in music, those backwards subliminal messages hidden both intentionally and unintentionally in rock music during the 1970s and 80s. In this episode I’ll talk about what started this phenomenon, the course it ran, and what effect (if any) it had on innocent music fans such as myself.

Great episode Rob! Being a huuuge Beatles fan, I was hoping that you would mention the whole Paul is Dead thing. I got a lot of mileage out of that in college, I did papers in 3 different classes on it. I went to a dorm armed with sound samples and asked people what they could hear, then I told them what to hear. They could never make anything out the first time. Anyway, I hate to tell you this, but as much as I love your new podcast idea, it is exactly the same format as One More Podcastle, even down to the voting on the website. Having said that, I hope that I can participate, I would love to try being on a podcast with other people, especially you! I may have technical difficulties though, my Mac is way out of date.

Yeah, you could probably do an entire episode of things hidden in Beatles songs. I had a lot of later, intentional backwards messages that I was going to include but I had to cut things off. The last one to get cut out was Beck's Loser, which contains the chorus hook reversed during the song's breakdown in the middle.

Really? Crap! I will have to download their podcast and check it out. Shoot, I thought this was a really original idea! I suppose there is enough room in the world for two similar shows but I'd rather do something original. Drat.

Lots of stuff I never heard in music back then!
I played a lot of Prince albums with a friend and noticed the backwards bits in 'Darling Nikki' but never were able to reverse the CD ;)
And of course Weird Al has his own approach. Brilliant.
