Episode 128: Commodore 128

Post by Flack »

Episode 128 is Online.

For Episode 128 of You Don't Know Flack it seemed fitting to talk about the Commodore 128, even though I didn't personally own one back in the day. This episode also includes 20 minutes of rambling after I had driven 800 miles in a day so, lucky you.

Holy crap! SAM! I had forgotten all about SAM! I had some vague recollection of a C64 speech synthesis program, but could never remember or figure out what it was called in the hopes that I could get it to run in emulation. As it turns out, there's a DOS command line SAM simulator... whose author totally missed a trick by not calling it a SAMulator. Not quite as capable as the real thing, but fun to mess around with. (As far as getting it to run in Windows, you can batch file it since it's a command line thing, so you can actually get it to read some pretty long stretches of stuff if you plan it out and code it correctly.)

I really have only the vaguest memories of the 128. I know one of the local BBS SysOps bought one brand new, full price, to run his BBS on, because his C64 could barely handle the load. That was the first one I ever saw.

Thanks for the plug, by the way - if it makes things any easier, I redesigned theLogBook's splash page when I started doing the little mini-podcasts a few weeks ago, so it's right there at the front door. Totally wasn't expecting the plug. I was about as sleepy as you sounded when I listened to it last night, and I went "Whoa, did I hear that right?"

Get some sleep, man. The dangerous sharp metal objects of the world ain't gonna find themselves.

Not to spoil it, but I plugged your and Ferg's podcasts on the Retroist. The post goes live tomorrow at noon central time.

Dude I just recently bought a Numark DJ controller too, in October. I got the Mixtrack (without the onboard sound card.) I've only really messed with it a few times though so far.

I came from a night of drinking and did this repetitive mix, kinda just experimenting with it. It has it's moments I guess.

The other night I messed with it some more, soberly:

I agree it's a somewhat useless purchase, but I still think it's fun to have around. I'm gonna buy some fog machines, lights and some giant speakers to go with it.

Here's the AC/DC mix I did, again, just playing around.

I still haven't figured out where everything maps to on the controller. I was a bit underwhelmed by the documentation but I'm getting there. Right now I can't figure out how to custom set all three sound effects on each deck. Even in the software I can only figure out how to set one per side. I am using Serato DJ (full version).
