Episode 115: Text Adventures

Post by Flack »

Episode 115 is Online.

Episode 115 of You Don't Know Flack is all about text adventures. This episode is unique in multiple ways. Not only does it feature the infamous Interactive Fiction author Robb Sherwin via Skype ... but it features him for approximately two hours. What can I say? Robb and I got carried away talking about text adventures!

Once I got past the sound quality issue (which took me about two minutes) I found the interview absolutely fascinating. Actually, since RobB was asking as many questions as you, it was more like you guys were sitting around a kitchen table with a 12 pack and having this totally cool text adventure discussion. Awesome!

For all the money we've raised to pay Tdarcos to cook crepes and upload videos, I think we should put together a small fund and buy Robb a new microphone. :)

Thanks for listening to the whole thing, 'vark. (I am assuming that you listened to the whole thing.) I know this episode was especially long, but I just couldn't find anything to cut out of the conversation. I agree that it was more of a two-way conversation than either of us interviewing the other one, and in this case, I think it worked out great. I thought it was interesting that even though Robb and I are almost exactly the same age we were into text adventures at two different times.

I would definitely like to do more Skype-related episodes in the future.

I listened to Episode 155 this past Sunday while driving to ABQ from Tulsa. I didn't notice how long the podcast was - which shows you how good it was - until the battery on my MP3 player died. Once I replaced the battery (which wasn't until an hour later when I pulled into a rest stop) I was back listening to Robb and Rob.

Aardvark was right: it was more like two guys just sitting around with a couple beers shooting the breeze than an actual interview. I learned as much about text adventures from you, Rob, as I did from Robb. That made it, IMHO, more interesting, however.

I'm not sure if anyone new to text adventures or, at least, the latest generation of text adventures would understand all that was going on during the podcast. I was already familiar with Hanger 22 and so I understood the discussions about GPS and the alien and so on. A person unfamiliar with the game may have had difficulty following everything. I'm not 100% sure on this until I listen to the podcast again with the focus on whether or not a NooB would get it.

A podcast on the introduction to Text Adventures would be nice. Not so much on the early stuff but what the current scene in text adventures (aka Interactive Fiction) is like and where to go (or not go) if you are new to the genre.

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. I agree, I think an introduction to modern interactive fiction would make a great topic. I'll add it to the list!

It's been a while since I listened to this episode, but I just came across Your Adventure Ends Here, a nice article on the revival of interactive fiction / text adventures.
