Spreading the Word?

Post by Flack »

Each episode of You Don't Know Flack (YDKF) is posted to both podcast.robohara.com and iTunes.

podcast.robohara.com has an RSS feed, which I think some people follow for updates.

Additionally, I post the info to 4 or 5 forums: here (obviously), Digital Press, Atari Age, Particles ... I think that's it.

What are some good ways to expand my audience? Where are some good places to advertise without coming off looking like a spammer?

Can you advertise on the Retroist site in any way? Or is that strictly forbidden?

Facebook and Twitter, obviously but I think you already do that. The only other thing I can think of is for you to stray from the beaten path: advertise on various forums and other sites that you don't normally go but contains a potentially interested audience.

Oh yeah, I forgot -- they go out to Facebook and Twitter too.

Since the next episode is about arcade games, I guess I could hit up a couple of arcade-themed forums and post there. I just hate to be the guy with 0 posts saying "Hi, listen to my new podcast!"

Can't wait for a new YDKF episode :)

I am not a marketing guy and have no clue about how to advertise anything. I also have a hard time trying to sell things to people. I would make a (or be a) poor car salesman.

But besides twitter and facebook you might try some of the other tech podcasters in the US. Leo Laporte from Twit sometimes talks about retro/vintage computing with Steve Gibson on the Security Now podcast.

Might be a dumb idea and don't know if he wants to talk to you or visa versa , but then again wouldn't hurt to try...

Thanks man. Yeah, some networking between podcasts is definitely a good idea.

I'll make a post on KLOV about your podcast so you don't have to.

That being said, there's no concept of post count on rec.arcade games collecting (whatever it is) so you could put a post there. (People do still read it, even if nobody posts there.)

The new podcast went up last week and so far the hits are pretty low. If anyone can help spread the word, I'd be grateful.

Last week I posted a notice on Facebook, Twitter, and robohara.com. This morning, I posted updates to Digital Press, Particles, and Jolt Country.

If anyone wants to post links, here's the code I use:

Code: Select all

Episode 114 is Online.

Episode 114 of You Don’t Know Flack is all about Arcade Auctions. In this episode I talk about my experiences of buying arcade games at auctions. I share some tips and tricks of the trade, including what to bring, what to look for, and what to expect. I have been attending arcade auctions for almost 20 years, and have purchased around 70 arcade games from auctions during that time.

I plugged the latest episode on The Retroist, so hopefully that will help as well.

Some minor updates to this:

The show as always been on iTunes, but I just got it added to the Zune Marketplace (can anyone find me a link for that?) and I just submitted it to Stitcher. I found a couple of other large podcast directories but they seem pretty out of date.

The guys over at No Quarter plugged me for about five minutes. Those guys are awesome and I've been plugging them back. I'd like to get more involved in cross-pollinating with other podcasts.

I added a voice mailbox number to the show. People can now call and leave me messages in regards to the show. It remains to be seen how popular that becomes, but it's there.

I started a dedicated Facebook page for the podcast. Right now it has 75 subscribers. I'd like to build that and I hope to by diversifying blog topics.

I continue to advertise the show via my own blog which goes to Twitter and Facebook. I also announce it on a few web forums, most of which are pretty small.

I think the increased output will help raise the show's exposure... if I can keep up the pace!

I found your podcast by way of "No Quarter" a month or so ago. I'm always looking for new podcasts on retro-computing and the such and I never came across yours on iTunes doing searches. I say this only because there are so many out there to choose from. Even if it came up in a search, I probably over looked it because of the name. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm just saying that in my searches I have downloaded anything with the words retro, classic, nerd, geek, vintage, commodore, computer, 80's, video game, arcade, etc in the title. My keep to release ratio is not very good, but I keep fishin'. I just seem to start the hunt with the title. I do love your podcast and will continue to listen and promote when I can. I wish I had more friends interested in this genre, but as most of you know, I kind of get that quirky head tilt and the uninterested "thats cool" response when I tell anyone about my hobby. I'll keep pushing though.
