Post by Flack »

Episode 136 is Online.

Where did the time go? After a couple of weeks off, You Don't Know Flack is back with episode 136. In this episode I talk a bit about Funspot Arcade, the classic arcade in Laconia, New Hampshire. Last week on vacation I got to drop more than a few tokens into classic arcade machines at Funspot. How was it? Tune in and find out!

Another great episode Rob! My brother in law and I went to Funspot a few years ago hen we were visiting family in Vermont. It was so awesome to play some games that I only ever experienced through MAME and of course, to revisit old favorites. I'm glad you were able to go with your family, and I really loved the stories about your kids, they sound so sweet. I am jealous that you were the only one in the classic section, that must have been fun!

I too went to Funspot a couple of years ago (it's only a 4-hour drive from Montreal, so definitely feasible for a weekend road trip). We had amazing pizza at the O'Steak and Seafood in Laconia, which was a surprise as it was a medium-size pie for the price of a wood-oven single pizza, big enough for with doggie bags. Our friends' food also looked pretty good. And that was the day we visited Ralph Baer, so it was a pretty unforgettable day. :) BTW, his house is like a time machine!

As for the Funspot itself, it's the kind of place that can be overwhelming the first time around, with all the great classic games around (incidentally, at my 5-foot height, I had to tiptoe to play Battlezone!). The sitdown Star Wars cab was disappointing, as the vector monitor was dying, but there were plenty of other great games, including an arcade copy of Wonder Boy (or was it Monster Land?), and Bank Panic (located in a isolated corner next to the putt-putt green).

Around 10pm, we were pressed to leave because the driver wanted to head back to Montreal that same night (*shrug*), so Eric spent his leftover tokens in a redemption machine... when he hit the jackpot! For several minutes, the machine produced a never-ending double row of tickets. We had enough to trade them in for two Funspot beer glasses (perfect for beer or homemade smoothies -- just not both at once!) and two Funspot shot glasses.

We're planning to return there sometime in the next couple of months, but will rent a hotel room this time so we can go there both days. Mind you, if we had a car, we'd probably go there a few times a year.
